About

I am a historian of modern South Asia, with an interdisciplinary background in History and International Relations. My research foregrounds the intertwined international histories of caste, migration, and mobility across the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal. I am based at the University of Exeter where I am a Lecturer in Modern South Asian History and co-director of the Exeter South Asia Centre. My first book Coolie Migrants, Indian Diplomacy: Caste, Class, and Indenture Abroad, 1914-67 was published by Hurst in November 2025, with an American edition published by Oxford University Press in March 2026.

I am currently working on a new project Caste at Bay that recovers histories of anti-caste internationalism across the Bay of Bengal by tracing the prolific circular mobilities of communities traversing South and South-east Asia.
